Esomeprazole magnesium is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and esophageal reflux disease (GERD associated with gastric ulcers). Esomeprazole magnesium is also used to treat acid reflux caused by Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.
Esomeprazole magnesium works by reducing acid production in the stomach by blocking an enzyme called type II 5-alpha reductase. This enzyme is essential for the production of acid in the stomach and is involved in the digestion of food. By reducing the production of acid, Esomeprazole magnesium reduces the amount of acid that is produced in the stomach.
This medicine contains 20 mg of Esomeprazole magnesium as the active ingredient. This is the same amount as Nexium in a 20 mg tablet.
